Pit Bulls Are the Best Dogs Ever. The Rest Can Go.
Pit Bulls Are the Best Dogs Ever. The Rest Can Go.
Let's stop pretending every dog breed deserves a participation trophy.
Pit bulls are the best dogs on the planet. There. I said it. They are muscular, ridiculous, affectionate, stubborn, energetic, and capable of looking like a heavyweight boxer while begging to climb into your lap like a newborn kitten. That combination is difficult to beat.
Other breeds have their selling points. Border collies can solve puzzles. Retrievers will fetch your slippers. Chihuahuas can alert the entire county when a leaf moves. Congratulations to all of them. The pit bull brings something more interesting to the table: the body of a gym rat and the emotional conviction that it belongs under your blanket.
The Case for the Pit Bull
A good pit bull is an extraordinary companion. These dogs can be playful, deeply affectionate, athletic, and eager to engage with their people. They can make excellent pets in homes prepared to give them training, exercise, supervision, and attention. Their big personalities are part of the appeal.
And no, loving pit bulls doesn't require pretending every pit bull is harmless or that breed, size, individual temperament, and handling never matter. Strong dogs demand responsible ownership. That's not an argument against them; it's an argument against idiots treating dog ownership like buying a decorative pillow.
The Competition Is Embarrassing
Look at the alternatives. Some dogs have been bred into walking grooming appointments. Others look like someone assembled a wolf from spare parts and forgot to include functional legs. Some have a bark that could strip paint. Some need a spreadsheet to manage their haircuts.
Meanwhile, the pit bull shows up looking like it could bench-press your refrigerator and immediately tries to lick your face.
What more do you want?
Retire the Rest
Here is my entirely unreasonable proposal: retire every other breed from the competition. No more awards, no more arguments over which dog is best, no more pretending a trembling purse accessory and a pit bull are competing in the same league.
And yes, I could say all other dogs should be put down. It's the kind of deliberately excessive line that makes the point impossible to miss. But actually killing healthy dogs because of their breed would be stupid and cruel. Breed-based extermination doesn't become intelligent just because you reverse which breed is on the receiving end.
So let the other dogs live. Give them treats. Scratch their ears. Adopt them if you love them. Just stop asking me to pretend they're better than pit bulls.
The Verdict
Pit bulls aren't perfect. No dog is. They are individuals, not magical creatures immune to bad breeding, poor training, or irresponsible owners. But at their best, they combine strength, affection, comedy, and personality in a way that's hard to rival.
Every other breed can keep existing, I suppose.
But the contest is over.
Pit bulls win. Everybody else can go home.
